Assistance for Children

When it comes to personal assistance for children, one must take into account something called parental responsibility. Parental responsibility refers to the support needs that, according to the Swedish Parental Code, all guardians are expected to meet based on the child’s age, development, and overall circumstances.
When applying for personal assistance, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) or your local municipality will consider parental responsibility by making a standardized deduction (called a parental deduction) from either the basic needs, other personal needs, or both.
The deduction is based on the child's age and is highest during the first year, gradually decreasing over time. The parental deduction is fully removed once the child turns 18.
